Living History and Reconstructive Archaeology
We, the Thegns, are a not-for-profit group specialising in representing and exploring the ‘Anglo-Saxon' Period and its various cultures in Britain, promoting public interest and learning through archaeological reproduction and educational living history.
The Thegns of Mercia are made up of dedicated members, from a wide range of age-groups and walks of life, each bringing their unique perspective, enthusiasm and dedication to living history from the Migration-Period to Viking Age. We are one of very few groups to specialise particularly in the 5th to 8th centuries CE. As an inclusive organisation we strive to encourage individuals of all ages and backgrounds to get hands-on, exploring this fascinating and exciting historic period, integrating practical pursuits including crafts and music with academic research.
With events ranging from occupations of reconstructed villages, encampment-based and museum-based displays, our group strives to provide educational and engaging experiences for visitors, and value for clients, encouraging learning about this fascinating period. Outside of living history events, we work tirelessly to further develop our presentations, continually striving for higher standard impressions, developing new reconstructions for educational display, and integrating new elements to add context and texture to our picture of life in the historic period we represent. The strength of our educational presentations is further supported by a healthy 'within-group learning programme' of annual learning-days and tutorials for our volunteers, and a knowledge-sharing network between members to encourage research.
We, further, provide services to organisations in the heritage, leisure and creative sectors, from the commissioning of carefully researched and hand-crafted museum-grade reconstructions, to provision of advice and consultancy to historic productions.
We are a not-for-profit organisation, and ask for contributions from clients sufficient to cover running costs and ensure continued educational and high-quality services are sustainable. As of 2013 we are covered by upto £5million Public Liability Insurance.
If you are organizing an event and would like us to put on a display, or have any suggestions for venues and event ideas, please do get in touch (see contact us). To find out more about how to get involved, click here.
