Living History
The Thegns of Mercia deliver high quality, educational and engaging living history experiences tailored to your event, from providing a few Anglo Saxon warriors from the 5th to 8th century (sometimes supplemented with representatives of the 9-11th century) to outdoor encampments, craft demonstrations and even a mock grave excavation. Our services are audience and age-group targeted, with further ability to represent individual centuries or present a broader picture, according to client needs.
With a strong emphasis on encouraging engagement and learning, the Thegns of Mercia work to a consistently high standard with respect to authenticity, intellectual honesty, and ensuring all displays and demonstrations are underpinned by a strong evidence base.
Regular clients include the UK's premier Anglo-Saxon heritage site Sutton Hoo (National Trust), with other past clients including Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery, Staffordshire County Council, Bishops Wood Centre, West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village, and Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery (alongside the world-famous Staffordshire Hoard exhibition).

- Display of one of the largest collections of Staffordshire Hoard Replicas assembled, all presented in context
- Reconstructed Anglo Saxon and 'Viking' arms and armour, including one of the only full reproductions of the Benty Grange Helmet.
- Arts, crafts, and writing from the 5th-11th centuries
- Anglo-Saxon and 'Viking' music and verse demonstrations using reconstructed instruments, and including live performances of 'Beowulf'.
- Living history, from fire-lighting and cooking to the making of tools and textiles
- Excavation display of a simulated early Anglo Saxon grave, and hands-on excavation activity, allowing illustration of the process from archaeological interpretation through to reconstruction
- Programmes tailored to target specific age groups and backgrounds
